Ideal College of Arts and Sciences(A), Kakinada was established as a Junior College in 1970 and inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and former Prime Minister of India Sri P. V. Narasimha Rao. The institution grew through the constant efforts of founder members, intellectuals, educationists and patriots including Dr. Col. D. S. Raju, Dr. P. V. N. Raju, Dr. P. Chiranjeevini Kumari, Dr. N. S. R. Sastry and others.

The College was formed by the Education Society, Kakinada through the education policy adopted by the State Government under the chairmanship of Dr. P. V. N. Raju. Under the guidance and administration of Dr. P. Chiranjeevini Kumari, the institution has continued to serve students from Kakinada and surrounding areas. Ideal Degree College was later renamed as Ideal College of Arts & Sciences, Kakinada.

The college is conferred autonomy by UGC and was accredited by NAAC, Bangalore with B++ grade in 2006. It is also noted as the first aided college in the district to be conferred autonomy and NAAC accreditation.

The college is located in an urban area and has two campuses spread over a little over 13 acres. It is a grant-in-aid institution receiving support from the State Government and UGC. Programmes are offered across Arts, Science, Commerce, Management and Computer Science at UG and PG levels.

The institution has 16 departments with faculty and supporting staff. The college supports student progression into higher education and placements across government administration, medical, pharmaceutical, law, educational institutions, industries, banking, railways, police, RTC, IT and other sectors.

Quality promoting activities such as workshops, seminars, orientation programmes, voter awareness programmes and training programmes are conducted in collaboration with district administration, District Youth Welfare Office, District Court, voluntary organizations, Peoples Science Movement and University NSS units.

Eminent educationists, university vice-chancellors, NAAC members, Magsaysay Award winners and lead bank managers have visited the college and inspired students. Many alumni serve in public administration, judiciary, law, medicine, universities and industry.

The College is known for participation in public activities including writers workshops, State Library Conferences, literary movements, awareness rallies and youth programmes.
